The Learning First Foundation sponsors a comprehensive teacher induction program for the City of Worcester. Pre-service and novice teachers would be invited to participate in a Summer Teaching Academy focused on Classroom Management; Creating Inviting and Effective Learning Environments; Response to Intervention - The Three Tiered Model and its role in Differentiated Instruction; Qualities of Pedagogy and Curriculum Alignment; Data Driven Instruction; Integrating Technology with Instruction; and Creating Effective Relationships with Students and their Families.
The intent is that teachers completing this seminar will raise student achievement, increase time on task for all students, and decrease discipline issues.
The Teaching Academy takes place in three phases.
Phase 1 consists of a 5-day introductory seminar offered in the summer prior to the beginning of the school year. During this session teachers will learn how:
- Model procedures for differentiating instruction to meet individual needs
- Classroom management skills that support the individual learner within the classroom through the creation of learning groups and skills stations
- To interpret and use specific benchmark and progress monitoring data to inform instruction;
- To utilize technology to significantly enhance instruction and learning
- To work with families to enhance learning and success in the classroom
- To implement the Writer’s Workshop program in the classroom
Phase 2 consists of bi-weekly follow up sessions throughout the year in order to maintain and develop relationships. Teachers having learned the skills offered through the seminar now have an opportunity to get together with fellow practitioners and share real-world experiences. This sharing takes many different forms. They may want to come into Seven Hills and observe in the classroom to see some of the strategies in action, or they can request that a Seven Hills teacher observe them in the classroom and offer real-time advice.
Phase 3 is the year-ending Best Practices Showcase. This special event allows teachers to share with each other their triumphs, the areas where they struggled and how to effectively move forward.
