The Learning First Foundation recognizes that one of the most important things we can do for the greater Worcester community is by providing educational and counseling services in the summer time. Research shows that the two-month summer gap between the school years can be a devastating backward step for children.

We work to alleviate that gap by scheduling a school year two weeks longer than the district schools. Still, when the pools are closed and the gas prices too high for trips and vacations, what better alternative than a menu of services provided by us for all of the children and families of Worcester. This program is staffed by well-trained professionals and available to all residents of Worcester at no cost.

Academic Enrichment and Support
The centerpiece of Summer Refresh is the opportunity for Worcester’s children to refresh and reinforce skills in reading, writing, mathematical computation, and problem solving.

Comprehension Strategies
Children who participate in Summer Refresh will engage in story hour in which they experience great literature read with the rich expressiveness that brings characters and themes to life in meaningful ways. It is through experiencing great literature that children learn the strategies necessary to comprehend what they read.

Vocabulary Development
Lack of vocabulary development plays a significant role in your child’s ability to feel confident at school. Having a well-developed vocabulary allows children to know the meanings for most of the words in a text so they can understand what they read.

Our program teaches children how to apply a variety of strategies to learn words meanings. This includes learning about word roots and word families and understanding the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes. In addition, we look at the Greek and Latin roots as they survive in modern English. In addition, we teach children how to make connections between words and concepts. Finally, we support children in accurately using learned words in speaking and writing.

Writing
In Writing Workshop, children are given the chance to craft their own tales. Children learn how to conference with their peers, revise and edit their creations, and publish and share as authors.

Phonics
This multisensory language intervention is designed to help students who are struggling with decoding unknown words.

Math
Fact Fluency
The math program consists of activities to enhance fact fluency by having children practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. These kinds of challenges are essential to growth and learning because they foster automaticity in the basic skills upon which so much learning is based.

Problem Solving
The children learn how to use the model drawing method which helps them to break down complex word problems to their essential parts.
